Having problems with oral health? Chances are, you aren't the only one. The best way to avoid embarrassing dental issues is to schedule regular dental examinations and check-ups and maintain a healthy, well-balanced diet. However, following these oral hygiene commandments isn't always enough. Many common embarrassing oral health problems such as bad breath, tooth decay, erosion, receding gums, and mouth sores can leave people feeling both physically uncomfortable and reluctant to smile. Fortunately, with the right treatments these embarrassing issues can be easily solved. Here are some of the issues dentists work to address as a part of a comprehensive dental treatment plan, as well as advice on how to avoid and treat embarrassing dental health issues.

Mouth Sores

For any type of mouth sore, we will first ask how long the lesion has been present. Usually, people will traumatize the inside of their mouth (pizza burn, cheek bite, etc.), but such sores will resolve themselves within a couple of weeks. If a lesion persists or you are experiencing a painful lesion without a clear culprit, we recommend an evaluation. Canker sores and cold sores are the most common types of mouth sores. Canker sores, or aphthous ulcers, can be quite painful. We can provide topical medication to help with the pain, but often cankers will disappear on their own. "Cold sores" are typically viral and normally occur above the lip. If you notice a cold sore, let it run its course and avoid further irritation - topical over-the-counter medications can quicken and soothe this process. If you are ever concerned about any type of sore, it's best to get them checked out to avoid future complications.

Bad Breath

If you brush and floss at least twice a day and still experience bad breath, a larger issue like a cavity or tooth decay may be at play. Cavities usually start out small and aren’t visible until your dentist performs an examination. Therefore, if you notice symptoms such as tooth pain in conjunction with bad breath, you might have a cavity. Another common issue that may cause bad breath is tooth enamel erosion. This occurs when acid present in your mouth increases the rate at which your tooth enamel decays. Enamel erosion could have many causes, including the consumption of acidic food and drinks or acid reflux. If you notice heightened sensitivity, discoloration, or cracks and chips in your teeth as well as bad breath, you may be experiencing tooth enamel erosion. A consultation with your dentist can help you determine the outstanding cause of your bad breath, as well as a plan of action.

Receding Gum Lines

Receding gums can be tricky to treat, for there are a wide array of potential causes. For instance, they caused by the natural aging process, brushing too hard, or even teeth grinding. However, they should be attended to at the first sign of symptoms, especially if gum disease is a potential concern. Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is a very serious issue. If you notice that your gums are bleeding, swollen, or bright red in color, you may be experiencing some form of gum disease. At the first sign of symptoms, consult your dentist – gum disease should not be underestimated, as it has serious repercussions like permanent jaw and tooth damage.

The Bottom Line

From mouth sores to unsightly receding gum lines and tooth decay, embarrassing dental issues can take a toll on your mentality, well-being, and livelihood. You may be embarrassed by certain aspects of your dental health or your smile, but consulting your dentist at the first sign of an issue is always a wise choice in preventing further complications and getting you back on track.
